Empowering Entrepreneurship and Economic Transformation in Burundi

The PRETE Project (Projet pour l’Emploi et la Transformation Économique) represents a major national initiative aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship, fostering inclusive economic growth, and supporting sustainable development in Burundi. Implemented by the Government of Burundi with the support of the World Bank, PRETE focuses on improving access to finance, expanding market opportunities, and enhancing the competitiveness of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.
Through a comprehensive and inclusive approach, the project contributes to job creation, economic resilience, and local value chain development across strategic sectors such as agriculture, aquaculture, livestock, horticulture, manufacturing, and digital innovation. Particular attention is given to women entrepreneurs, youth, and refugee communities, ensuring that economic transformation leaves no one behind.
PRETE also promotes a more enabling business environment by supporting institutional reforms, entrepreneurial capacity building, digital financial solutions, and sustainable investment mechanisms. By strengthening local entrepreneurship ecosystems and facilitating access to technical assistance, mentorship, and financing opportunities, the initiative empowers Burundian enterprises to scale their impact and contribute to long-term national prosperity.
