Gabon economic update: Protecting the poor despite slower growth
In 2015, a pivotal conference titled “Social Dialogue and Economic Challenges in Gabon” brought together government officials, private sector leaders, civil society representatives, and international partners under the umbrella of collaboration and reform. Organised in partnership with the World Bank, the event highlighted the urgent need to address Gabon’s pressing economic, social, and environmental challenges.
The conference was a cornerstone in Gabon’s ongoing structural transformation, aiming to lay the groundwork for sustainable and inclusive development encompassing the following fields:
- Diversifying the economy: reducing the country’s heavy reliance on oil and identifying new avenues for growth.
- Reducing social inequalities: crafting strategies to improve public services and uplift vulnerable populations.
- Strengthening transparency and governance: enhancing accountability and trust in public institutions.
The conference resulted in the publication of the Gabon Economic Update by the World Bank, providing a detailed analysis of the nation’s economic landscape amidst declining oil revenues and structural challenges. This landmark document continues to guide discussions on reform and policy innovation in Gabon.
